Act 1: Lower Manhattan Small Businesses Affected By 9/11

MBAs4NYC is a 501(c)3 non-profit consulting organization that united the expertise of caring MBA business professionals with small businesses in the lower Manhattan area that were adversely affected by the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Co-founded by Rob Steir and Colleen Galvin, MBAs4NYC was established in August 2002 with a grant from the Empire State Development Corporation and the US Housing and Urban Development Agency (HUD). MBAs4NYC was a unique volunteer-driven organization providing pro-bono consulting services to lower Manhattan small businesses striving to regain their pre September 11th levels of profitability.

We operated from September 2002 through the end of 2003. We offered uniquely designed consulting projects to small business owners featuring objective strategic and tactical business assistance. Our commitment was to provide small business owners with the best service possible. We matched the best team of professionals to meet a client's specific needs and took great care to define a project that would have a lasting positive impact (see project methodology.

Our services were structured to bring in a fresh pair of eyes, usually a team of one to three volunteers who were unburdened by the day-to-day stresses of managing the business, to serve as a sounding board, to provide structure, research, or suggestions that helped make critical decisions easier. MBAs4NYC offered access to talented, seasoned individuals who brought new ideas, different perspectives and genuine desires to help. These projects ranged from 20-100 hours of donated volunteer time and lasted from one to ten months in duration.

In the aftermath of the September 11th tragedy, many small business owners have been forced to confront issues that require difficult decisions many have not had to face before.

In response to these new business challenges, the goals of MBAs4NYC were as follows:

      • To preserve and grow jobs in lower Manhattan by providing qualified small businesses with business expertise not ordinarily accessible to them

      • To make a significant impact on the profitability of each small business who participates in our program

      • To offer unique opportunities for highly skilled, seasoned business professionals to volunteer their time and expertise to the economic redevelopment of lower Manhattan
